Single Day Guided Fly Fishing - One Person

At the Complete Angler we have been the experts that have set up most overseas anglers who arrive at the gateway to New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch.  For over 30 years we have outfitted and directed beginners to experts on how and where to fish.  Regardless of skill level we recommend getting a guide straight off.  South Island fishing is renowned as the best brown trout fishery in the world, but monster browns are not always the easiest to catch.   We can organize a trip for a day, a week or whatever you have in mind.

Our advice to anyone who arrives would be to get a guide and get one at the beginning of your trip.  We have taken out a number of exceptional anglers for last couple of days of their trip that just could not crack it with in the 14 days they were here.  Let us help you focus on catching the fish of a lifetime.

Being based in Christchurch is a great option because we can typically find fishable water regardless of weather. Canterbury is one of the most overlooked regions on the South Island, many of the local experts of Southland and Nelson will travel here to chase the elusive Trophy Brown Trout.  Although renowned for the Brown Trout, we also have a phenomenal Rainbow fishery, and even a couple of locations for huge Brook trout.

The headwater fisheries of the major local rivers that hold some of the largest wild Brown and Rainbow trout to be found in New Zealand.  These headwater fisheries are renown for some of the most spectacular scenery and amazing fishing,  most fish in the headwaters are large, over 5lbs (22inchs +) with the potential for the elusive Trophy(10lbs+).   With fish of this size the number of fish per kilometre is relatively low.  Stalking and Sight fishing is the only way in gin clear waters of the backcountry.

The foothills and on the plains is where we have some wonderful braided rivers and brilliant spring creeks. The fish size in the middle regions tends to drop to the middle size range2-6lbs (16-24inches still significant by world standards) but the number of fish increases.

The River mouths can hold some amazing fishing for sea run Brown Trout and Chinook Salmon.  This fishery starts up with the arrival of a local delicacy to man and trout alike known as Whitebait.  It fires From November to January with the second wave of bait fish (Locally known as Silveries).  The number and size can be mind-blowing through these lower sections.

Canterbury does have some spectacular lake fishing too.  The lakes offer Rainbow, Brown, and even Brook trout in a few places.  Fly fishing the lake margins can produce some amazing results.

Our Exceptional guide Darian Shaheen has been guiding and teaching fly casting here in Canterbury since 2006.  A day with Darian will give you a great understand on what we do and how we do it, while getting the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime.  We also have a stable of local and regional guides we can recommend throughout New Zealand.

Typical day guiding includes:  pickup at your accommodation.  Transportation to the mutually determined destination (typically under 2hours drive).  Rods, reels, flies, leaders and tippets included.  A nutritious lunch, snacks, and water provided.  Return transportation in the evening after a great day.

Multi day and Heli trips are available.  Best discussed in person or on the phone.
